Japanese Mokohanga Woodblock Print Making (Watercolor in Perpetual Motion)
Demonstration will include an Introduction to Traditional Mokohanga Woodblock Print Making and also discuss the methods of Sharpening cutting tools used in developing wood block plates. The presentation will also include a demonstration of techniques and methods in printing a woodcut plate.
Goals:
1. Provide a quick introduction and history of Mokohanga woodcut prints
2. Provide insight on tools and techniques used by traditional Japanese artist
3. Discuss the understanding of steps in design, transfer, cutting plates and printing
4. Discuss importance of keeping tools sharp and steps in sharpening tools
5. Demonstrate Printing technique
6. Provide resources for continued study of Mokohanga
At the end of the demonstration, the viewer will have a basic understanding of the history and techniques used in the Mokohanga printing process.
Manuel (Manny) Boudreaux is a member of the Brenham Fine Art League, Art League of Fort Bend, The Tomball Art League, Galveston Art League and Watercolor Art Society of Houston. He has been involved with both The Tomball Watercolor group and Brenham Watercolor class.
He participated in the Lone Star Art Guild shows where he has won several awards for his watercolor, pen and Ink, pastel paintings and woodblocks.
His style has been heavily influenced by Japanese culture while on assignment in Japan working in Yokohama and Tokyo area between 2007 and 2015. His topics reflect a traditional fine arts approach which include western and eastern themes, realistic and contemporary subjects including landscapes, seascapes, city scenes, wildlife, and historical settings.
